Jus Crea Giammarino, ND – Land & Food Sovereignty for Indigenous Peoples of the Northeast: Impacts of Nutrition for Substance Use & Mental Health Disorders

Native Americans experience higher rates of mental illness, including depression, suicide, and substance use disorders, than any other population in the United States. These health disparities directly correlate with the consequences of colonization, such as the loss of land and food sovereignty. We will explore the impacts of nutrition on mental health and substance use disorders, reviewing relevant research. Additionally, we will cover nutrition, supplementation, plant medicines, and other holistic modalities as potential interventions.
